  **by
  【前】 …までには∥ by five o'clock 5時までには / I shall have finished it by tomorrow. 明日までにはそれを終えているだろう.

  【語法】
  (1) ［byと( until］ by は「(未来のある時)までに(は)」という動作?行為の完了の時点を示すのに対し， until は「(未来のある時)まで」継続した状態の終点を示す. したがって by は継続を表す動詞と， until は(否定文以外では)瞬間を表す動詞と共には用いない：I slept until ［×by］ midnight. / He will come by ［×until］ midnight. 否定文では両者とも可能だが意味内容に相違がある. He will not come by ［until］ 5 o'clock. で， by では5時以降のある時に， untilでは5時きっかりに来ることが通例暗示される.
  (2) ［byと( before］ We got home by ［before］ 5 o'clock. では， by では5時ぎりぎりに帰ったことが暗示されるのに対し， before では漠然と「5時前に」という意味.
