1. The Caquetio people lived along the shores of Lake Maracaibo and on the Dutch'ABC'islands of Aruba, Cura鏰o and Bonaire.
  2. Though Spain first claimed it in 1499, Holland's rule left lasting cultural influences on the indigenous population of Caquetio Indians and those who followed.
  3. Most of the population is descended from Caquetio Indians and Dutch and to a lesser extent of Africans, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, and Sephardic Jewish ancestors.
  4. In addition to indigenous peoples known today, the population included historic groups such as the Kalina ( Caribs ), Auak? Caquetio, Mariche, and Timoto-Cuicas.
  5. Fragments of the earliest known Indian settlements date back to 1000 AD . As sea currents made canoe travel to other Caribbean islands difficult, Caquetio culture remained more closely associated with that of mainland South America.
